I deleted a cobra lily today. The plant was throttling a lavender and my ultimate garden goal is native plants. Digging deep and pulling bulb after bulb from the sandy soil, I noticed a lacy tunic buildup around some of the bulbs. It protects the bulb and the plant.
This covering pulled off easily and wasn't doing anything defensive at that moment. Made me think about how mothers want to protect their children. We build up the most easily penetrated defenses around the little ones and hope they last into adulthood. Then watch as calamity and disaster engulf them. Which ones will survive, wiser and perhaps formulating safe ecosystems for the next generation?
